Why don’t you love her? A journey from self-destruction to self-love.

“A big chunk of my life I’ve been sitting in the fiery furnace of affliction wondering when I would be done baking... I guess we all visit that furnace often, maybe we even make a home there. I’m pretty sure the keeper of the furnace has said to me many times “Sit down and stay a while...I’ll show you what you can learn from this.  I think I’ve learned to enjoy the heat knowing that I’ll be better and stronger for it.”

-Emily Cox, Mothers Who Know, Episode #209

I was honored to be a guest for the second time on the Mothers Who Know podcast. I got to discuss in more detail my story of going from hurting and self-harming to fully being present in life and experiencing love for myself from myself. I am here to show survivors that they, too, can heal and fully experience their lives, relationships, and more to the fullest.

“Between stimulus and response there is a space.  In that space is our ability to choose our response.  In that response lies our growth and freedom.”

-Viktor Frenkl

I discussed five points with the audience that are five essential lessons I’ve learned along my healing journey. I live by these every day and use them to mentally get into a better space when I am struggling:

  1. There is purpose and meaning to all suffering.

  2. Forgiving ourselves and others through our Savior’s Atonement is crucial.

  3. Don’t let your inner critic bully you.

  4. Gratitude dispels darkness.

  5. Cultivate and speak up about your own boundaries.

“Every day I express gratitude to my Heavenly Father that He allowed me to live!  And not just to live, but to love life and love living!  There’s a difference between being alive and being in love with living.  I struggle with crippling depression at times, and anxiety and overwhelm are my closest companions. I’ve gotten to the point that they’ve been with me for so long, I’ve given them each a name.  That way I can get to know them better and understand what they’re trying to teach me.”

-Emily Cox, Mothers Who Know, Episode #209
